The early days begin with so much
Warmth and promise. They hold the vast
Expanse of the world, nay, of all the cosmos.
We slip and trip and fall, but always
We raise ourselves and start anew.
Each breath, each step, each tingling of
The nerves within the skin announces
The start of newness, of wonder, of beauty.
But oh, when the days [...]

They fall gently on the January branch.
Taking their places, they recline
Among their siblings,
As they start their frozen slumber
In the day’s last light.
They remain, still and sleeping,
Until the spring’s first bird
Coos to rouse them
From their chilly nap.
Upon awakening to the sun’s gentle kiss,
They drip softly to the earth
And water the thirsty, waiting ground.
